About the Authors


David

David W. Paul  David is a writer who lives in Seattle, USA. He received a B.A. in History (cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) from Carleton College, an M.A. in International Studies from Johns Hopkins, and a Ph.D. in Politics from Princeton. He taught political science and international studies at the University of Washington for nine years before leaving academia for the life of the free lance. He has traveled extensively in Europe, North Africa, and Brazil, and he has lived abroad as a Fulbright Fellow in Hungary and Austria. His writings cover a wide territory, including history and political science, fiction, film criticism, poetry translations, international political risk analysis, software documentation, and World Wide Web content. His published books include, among others, The Cultural Limits of Revolutionary Politics; Politics, Art and Commitment in the East European Cinema; and How to Publish on the Internet (co-authored with Andrew Fry).



Martin A. Schell  Martin lives in his wife's home town of Klaten, midway between Yogyakarta and Surakarta in central Java. He received an A.B. in Psychology from Princeton University and an M.A.T. in Teaching English from Reed College. Since 1984, he has been living continuously in East Asia: Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia. In Tokyo, he rewrote Japanese-to-English translations and team-taught translation with Japanese instructors. He was then an English instructor at two universities in Thailand, after which he was on the staff of the Asian Institute of Gemology in Bangkok, teaching the art and science of colored gemstone grading to students from six different continents. In Indonesia, he has worked as an English teacher, export agent, marketing consultant, and translation editor. At present, he is a freelance editor and also serves as the Indonesia correspondent for The Economist Intelligence Unit, performing semiannual cost-of-living surveys and security assessments. He has taught a variety of self-development workshops in the USA, Japan, Australia, and Indonesia, most of which focused on recognizing universal patterns of behavior.
