What is Moshiach?

The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersohn, has emphasized that the concept of Moshiach is an essential belief in Judaism. This is evident from the Torah (Five Books of Moses), and throughout the Prophets. It is also one of the Principles of Faith listed by the Rambam (Moses Maimonides).

The basic belief is that a righteous Jewish leader is destined to bring the Jewish people back to strong observance of Torah, to deliver us from our enemies, and to bring us back to the holy land of Israel. With Moshiach in Israel, we will experience the rebuilding of the holy Temple in Jerusalem, where we will participate in the restored Divine Service and the revelation of G-d's presence.

The phenomenon of Moshiach is described as a redemption for the Jewish people. However, this redemption is not only for the Jewish people, but for all of mankind, as it will bring in an era of peace and prosperity, with no more war, no more oppression, and no more poverty or sickness.
